Continuing the Journey Towards a More Sustainable Future: Toitū Carbon Reduce Certification 2026
At Whitestone Cheese, we’re proud to make our cheese in the Waitaki — a place where the land, farms and natural environment are closely connected to what we do every day.
That connection comes with a responsibility. Looking after our environment is an ongoing commitment to understanding our impact, making informed choices and continually finding ways to improve.
We’re proud to have achieved Toitū carbon reduce certification again in 2026, continuing the work we began with our first certification.
Measuring Our Impact
Toitū certification helps us understand our carbon footprint and identify where we can make the greatest difference. Measuring our emissions gives us a clear way to track progress and make decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
For us, this is an important part of being a responsible New Zealand-owned business and planning for the future.
Turning Commitment Into Action
We’re continuing to explore practical ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve the efficiency of our operations. This includes exploring renewable energy options for our Oamaru factory and upgrading more of our chilling systems to improve energy efficiency.
We’re also continuing to look for opportunities to reduce emissions and improve how we manage resources across our business. Every step contributes to our ongoing commitment to a lower-carbon future.
Looking Ahead
Toitū provides a framework for us to keep measuring, learning and improving. It’s a reminder that sustainability isn’t about reaching a finish line — it’s about making progress and continuing to look for better ways of doing things.
We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and excited about what comes next. Our goal is to continue making great cheese while caring for the environment that makes our story possible.

We’re proud to share that we are now Toitū carbon reduce certified - marking the beginning of a new chapter in our sustainability journey. This certification means our carbon footprint has been independently measured and verified in line with international best practice. More importantly, it reflects our commitment to actively reduce emissions and operate responsibly for future generations.
2025 is shaping up to be a golden year for us. Not only have we celebrated a Champion of Champions title and taken home a string of gold medals at the NZ Champions of Cheese Awards, but we've also reached another significant milestone: achieving Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism Award.
